이번에 치과 의사 선생님이 직접 브랜딩하고 개발 중인 어린이용 치약·칫솔 패키지 디자인 의뢰를 진행하게 되었습니다. 이 브랜드는 제품 기획 초기부터 함께해온 프로젝트로, 처음부터 프랑스 유명 키즈 브랜드처럼 동화적이고 엔틱하면서도 고급스러운 분위기의 디자인을 목표로 했습니다. 우리는 토끼를 모티브로 로고와 엠블럼, 치약 용기와 단상자 패키지 디자인까지 전체 브랜드 아이덴티티를 개발했죠. 사실 이 브랜드의 디자인 요청은 늘 긴장됩니다. 일반적인 그래픽 작업보다 손그림과 수작업 일러스트의 비중이 훨씬 크기 때문입니다. 직접 스케치를 하고, 토끼 캐릭터를 한 장 한 장 그려야 하며, 디자이너마다 사용하는 붓·연필·펜의 종류와 선의 굵기에 따라 분위기가 완전히 달라집니다. 그래서 이런 프로젝트는 처음 작업한 디자이너나 일러스트레이터가 지속적으로 참여해야 브랜드의 통일성과 일관성을 유지할 수 있습니다. 완성된 손그림은 다시 일러스트레이터 프로그램으로 옮겨 벡터 작업을 진행합니다. 컬러를 입히고 크기를 자유롭게 조절하며 패키지 디자인에 맞게 편집하는 과정인데, 하나의 일러스트 안에도 수많은 패스(path) 데이터가 쌓이게 됩니다. 이 데이터가 많아질수록 파일 용량은 무거워지고 작업 중 오류나 블루스크린이 발생하기도 하죠. 그래서 많은 디자이너들이 이런 고난도 벡터 일러스트 작업을 부담스러워합니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 벡터 작업을 하는 이유는 확장성 때문입니다. 패키지 디자인은 이후 박람회, 광고, 매장 인테리어 등 다양한 곳에 활용되기 때문에 이미지를 아무리 확대해도 깨지지 않아야 합니다. JPEG 같은 일반 이미지 파일은 확대 시 픽셀이 깨지지만, 벡터 기반 AI 파일은 무한에 가깝게 확대해도 선명함을 유지할 수 있습니다. 또한 대부분의 인쇄 공장과 제작 업체들이 AI 파일을 기준으로 작업하기 때문에 실무적으로도 벡터 데이터는 필수적인 작업 방식입니다.

This time, I received a package design project for a children’s toothpaste and toothbrush brand created and branded directly by a dentist. This is actually a brand we have worked with since the very beginning of the product planning stage. From the start, the client wanted a design inspired by famous French children’s brands — something whimsical, storybook-like, antique, yet luxurious. We developed the entire brand identity around a rabbit motif, including the logo, emblem, toothpaste tube, and packaging box designs.

To be honest, whenever this brand requests a new design project, it makes me a little nervous. Unlike typical graphic design work, these projects require a huge amount of hand-drawn illustration and manual sketching. We have to draw rabbit-themed illustrations one by one by hand before moving into the digital process. Every designer has a different drawing style depending on the type of brush, pencil, pen, and line weight they use, which means the overall mood and atmosphere of the illustrations can vary significantly. That’s why projects like this often need to continue with the same illustrator or designer in order to maintain consistency and unity across the entire brand image and product line.

Once the hand-drawn illustrations are completed, they are imported into Adobe Illustrator for vector work. Colors are added, layouts are adjusted, and the graphics are refined for package design applications. A single illustration can contain an enormous amount of path data, with every tiny line and curve becoming part of the final artwork. As these layers of vector data accumulate, the file sizes become extremely heavy, sometimes even causing software crashes or blue screens during work. This is one of the reasons many designers tend to avoid highly detailed vector illustration projects — the workflow is demanding, time-consuming, and technically difficult.

However, there is a very important reason why we still work in vector format. These package designs are often used not only for product boxes, but also for exhibitions, advertisements, and large-scale store interiors. Vector illustrations can be enlarged almost infinitely without losing quality, while JPEG or raster images become blurry and pixelated when scaled up. In addition, most printing factories and packaging manufacturers work primarily with AI vector files, which makes vector-based design an essential part of professional packaging production.
